We use this Lavalier at work, because it has a 20' cable. Sounds great. You can usually find it for $20-$25.

For a grand, if anyone is viewing this video in 2013, you may want to look at the JVC GC-PX100. I'm not a big fan of the brand, but this camera seems to accomplish everything the person asking the question about cameras will need:
